No one in the supply chain foresaw a time when certain hides would be so cheap that there would be little value in processing them, and they would go to waste. “Nobody had a Plan B,” says the author of our exclusive Market Intelligence report. “The industry is beginning to face the situation that hides are now going to waste and meat producers are starting to act. “Trimming everything that cannot be used for specific leather productions as early as possible is a big step forward. This prevents waste along the production chain and the dream of many tanners to maximise cutting yields by reducing unusable input is beginning to be an option.” However, he feels the entire supply chain, from meat producers to finished goods brands, must sit down and discuss how they can tackle the problem of material going to waste. On the plus side for some, “there has never been a time when material was so abundant and so cheap”.
