Guideline for e-commerce platforms by next month: Reports

Amidst rising number of reports of alleged anomalies, Bangladesh Government is all set to come out with new guideline for the e-commerce entities operating in the country.

Come July, the Commerce Ministry will publish the guideline with an aim to basically protect the consumers’ rights, regulate refund and payment systems, iron out irregularities and ensure timely delivery of orders even as in the last one year or so, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, has, reportedly, received more than 5,000 complaints against e-commerce entities with complaints ranging from not getting the money back to deliveries been supplied in a year.

Speaking to media, the Director General of the WTO Cell, under the Commerce Ministry, Md Hafizur Rahman said the guideline will be published by next month even as he claimed some e-commerce companies weren’t making the timely deliveries and many customers did not get the refund properly while adding that this guideline, which will be sent to the Law Ministry for vetting now, will safeguard the consumers’ rights.

It may be mentioned here that under the rule, formulated as part of the Digital Commerce Policy 2018, if an e-commerce company fails to deliver a product on time, the money has to be returned to the consumer within seven days in case of advance payment while for delivery of a product, maximum 10 days have been stipulated.
