The chunk of defence budget for the FY2020-21 has been increased by Tk2,327 crore than that of the outgoing fiscal year. The amount allocated for military spending in this fiscal (Tk34,427 crore) is 7.24% more than the previous fiscal, according to the budget proposed by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, placed in parliament on Thursday. However, of the total Tk568,000 crore, 6.06% has been earmarked for the defence sector, scaling down from the allocation of the outgoing fiscal. In the last fiscal the amount was 6.1% of the total budget. Out of the total amount, Tk1,672 crore will be used for development works, Tk32,946 crore has been set aside for defence services while Tk1,440 crore has been appropriated as operating cost of the Ministry of Defence and other services. Tk41 crore has been set aside as operating costs of the Armed Forces Division which was Tk38 crore in the last budget.
